Macaroon Day @ Adriano Zumbo

This was a day not to be missed. A whole store full of Macaroons…..60 different flavours. There were the classics, ones that made you curious and then the just downright weird. (sorry for the late post though, I started a new job, so have been a bit busy)

By myself, I had to restrain from wanting to buy more than 10 as I knew I would just eat them all and feel sick for the rest of the day, but some things just need to be done, but I decided to buy a few for my family who I would see the following day…..bid mistake as it was such a hot day I soon realised they would not make it for another 12 hours, I had to sacrifice my stomach and devour them just so they would not go to waste (I had kind intentions I swear!)

In the end I bought 8 flavours, shares 3 and ate 7, but how many of them were liked, loved and which would not reach my mouth again! One of the first I tried, or wanted to try was the ‘Chuppa Chup’, inspired by a childhood legend of a lolly. It was on a lollypop stick, had a bubblegum flavoured biscuit and the cream was sherbet with flecks of something fabulous that went “crackle pop crackle pop crackle pop” in the back of your mouth. I was jumping up and down, like a little kid again, so excited to have the same experience I used to have every week after gymnastics with a crackle pop ice block.

The favourite flavour though? Olive Oil and Rosemary. It was just so strong in flavour and with a really light, more oily than dairy cream. In all honesty, it tasted like you were eating a foccacia and for me, would have been very easy to eat a few of these….I hope it is one they will be bringing back (as you can see from the photo I could not stop myself before it was photo time, and hence it lays on the left, half eaten)

The others I did get were:
- Black truffle (centre foreground) which were $10 a pop, and slightly disappointing, maybe the sweetness of the actual macaroon was too much as I found the flavour not coming through enough.
- Peanut butter (right foreground)…..now was this intense and rich or what! It was actually a mistake as I wanted the cheeseburger flavour, but ended up with peanut butter. Very night and strong roasted peanut flavour, not your supermarket ‘confectionery’ style, but wow, you could not eat more than one.
- Mexican chocolate (back row to the right) The cream was like a thick ganache and you could tell it was made of a strong.
- Mastic, yogurt and mint (middle back) was not really my cup of tea. A bit too sour and the mastic did not come out enough, otherwise it might have been a bit more balanced.
- Fig and orange (left back) was nice but mild in flavours compared to some of the others I had eaten by that stage. Maybe had I tried it first it would have wowed me a bit more, but I found it slightly mellow.

There is ONE I did not include until now. It must have an honourable mention, I thought. BURNT TOAST AND BUTTER…………………all I can say is AMAZING. The flavours were so nice, probably not a hard one to make but the final product looked good and had a taste that matched so I devoured it happily.

Now I bet you are all sad you missed this day, well I suggest you go to the cafe and enjoy a plate of macaroons with some coffee, or just get a box to take home and enjoy over the week…….although I bet they will not last that long.

Nice one Trish,

As I told you earlier, you didn’t miss out on anything special with the cheesebruger. It was very average (tomato sauce flavour way too tangy), but the actual cheese slice they made for it was interesting.
One other point I ned to make is that a lot of the flavours were really fragile, were they either fell apart and squashed really easily (don’t know if that’s cause of the ingredients in a few of them) or were handled really badly from the kitchen down to the store (a lof of the display ones were pretty crushed and mushy).
Got to agree though, peanut Butter was fab as was Choc + Salted Caramel (prob my favourite). Blueberry was okay, and there were a few others that weren’t too bad but I can’t remember now :)
Wil be keen to try a few others next time they do a day like that. Maybe a few more of the savoury variety…

Would love to have tried a few others but I would have to have been exercising all night and trough to the morning to burn it all off.

I agree they were fragile and broke very easily. It didn’t help it was a nice sunny day so the creams started to melt and that is when the fell apart.

I know….the work out began the next day for me.

Choc and salted caramel does sound divine hmmmmm…..I wonder how hard they are to make???

Yes I am very sad that I missd this day. I tried some unique flavours in San Francisco but up till that pointy I had only tried chocolate.

Really! well I think soon he will be adding new flavours. I read this week he is now experimenting with eggplant and ’smoky’ flavours, so I know we haven’t seen the best of AZ…….
